Anita: Safety Net
Construction netting, shadow stripes, amber eyes
15/01/2026
Red construction netting, sunlight slicing through mesh. Shadow stripes on skin, on jacket, on ground. One frame in black and white. Amber eyes steady through the pattern. Six frames, pulling tighter each time. The entire set happened in a scaffolding corridor wrapped in red safety netting. It wasn't a planned location — it was found on the walk, and the light coming through the mesh was too good to pass up. The netting threw diagonal shadow stripes across everything — face, jacket, the ground — which meant every frame had this graphic overlay that changed depending on where Anita stood and how the sun moved. The set progresses from wide to tight. The first frame is full-body, walking through the corridor with the netting stretching behind her. By the end it's just eyes, cheekbone, and the shadow pattern crossing her face. That compression mirrors a shift in mood from confrontational to something quieter and more vulnerable. It wasn't directed — it happened naturally as the session settled in. One frame went black and white — a straight-on shot where the shadow stripes turned her and the background into a single graphic composition. The rest stayed in color because the red netting, when thrown out of focus, creates this warm bokeh wash that gives the portraits a completely different feel from the monochrome version. Both approaches work because the location is so visually strong. Six frames, each one using the same crude construction material to do something it wasn't designed for. The netting did half the work. Anita did the rest. "The netting threw these wild stripes across her face and she just leaned into it — didn't flinch once."
