Sciurus Carolinensis
Alert eyes and nuts in green light

One squirrel, one summer, one woodland. Meadow to canopy, always climbing. Fur sharp against blurred branches. Twelve frames of an animal that never sits still. Grey squirrels move fast and unpredictably, which makes photographing them a game of anticipation — guessing where they'll go next and being ready when they pause for half a second to eat or look around. This one worked a territory that ranged from a wildflower meadow to the upper canopy of an evergreen, and the three frames that survived the edit each capture a different environment: ground level in the grass, mid-climb on a branch, and settled in the canopy with a nut. The meadow shot is the most open — the squirrel in lush green grass with small wildflowers, alert and upright. The evergreen shots are tighter and more intimate, with dappled light filtering through needles and the fur picking up every highlight. The difference in mood between the wide meadow frame and the close canopy frame is significant — same animal, completely different feel. All color, all shallow depth of field. The technique was simple because it had to be — there's no time to adjust settings when your subject is moving that fast. Available light only, fast shutter speeds, and shooting in bursts when the squirrel paused. The backgrounds are soft green abstractions that let the sharp fur texture do the work. Three frames from hours of watching and waiting. Wildlife photography is patience measured in rolls of bad exposures between good ones. "I spent hours just watching this squirrel work – seriously, the speed he ate that hazelnut mid-climb was incredible. That light in the evergreens was perfect."
